Reporting to the Principal Engineer – Thermal Systems, you will be responsible for the simulation and analysis of vehicle efficiency focusing on range and thermal systems within the Vehicle Development team.
·Development of simulation models for vehicle range and overall vehicle efficiency.
·Development of 1D vehicle simulation models covering the thermal management systems including:
oHigh voltage battery cooling & heating
oElectric propulsion system cooling
oRefrigerant system – conventional air conditioning and heat pump systems
oCabin cooling & heating
oThermal system calibration strategy
·Maintain models in accordance with changes to vehicle hardware, calibration and component & system physical test data
·Preparation of reports and feedback to the technical and project management teams
·Run models to verify system requirements, run system experiments, ‘What-if’ scenarios, and identify failure modes
·Pro-actively recommend component, system, and/or calibration changes that improve overall vehicle efficiency
·Work cross-functionally with Vehicle Attributes, Thermal & Climate systems, Electric Propulsion, Interiors, Drive Line, and Electrical groups
·You will have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a relevant area with at least 3 years of industry experience.
·Experience using simulation applications such as VSIM, GT Suite, Amesim, Matlab & Simulink, or similar 1D applications
·Demonstratable understanding of range simulation tools.
·Demonstratable understanding of powertrain cooling system function, components, and operating parameters
·Demonstratable understanding of air conditioning refrigerant system function, components, and operating parameters
·Demonstratable understanding of cabin HVAC system function, components, and operating parameters
·Understanding of fundamental thermodynamics and heat transfer theory, fluid mechanics & pressure losses in ducts, including use of empirical hand calculations
·Understanding of thermal system calibration concepts with regards to operating triggers of pumps, valves, compressor, fans, etc
·Correlation of simulation models to component & system physical test data
·Correlation of simulation results to hand calculations – sanity checking of model integrity
·Some experience in the use of 3D CFD applications and/or interpretation of results data
·Some experience of vehicle & rig testing and results analysis
·Understanding of system parasitic losses, efficiency, and how they relate to overall vehicle energy consumption
·Basic understanding of electric motor/generator theory, mechanical power transmission, and efficiency
·Basic understanding of Li-ion battery construction, operation, and heat generation processes
·Basic understanding of electrical power concepts such as series & parallel circuits, electrical resistance, and power calculations
·Where required support Engineering in cross-functional teams and meetings.
·Capable of working within tight time frames.
